Hi Guys! Today is a super fun day for East Coast Creative! I’m sharing 12 Make-It-Yourself Holiday Gift Ideas with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on Live! with Kelly & Michael. Hopefully, you can watch the segment (9am EST), but even if you can’t, this is your lucky day… I’m sharing all 12 project tutorials so that you can give some fabulous handmade gifts that your friends and family will love! You can check out the other 11 projects HERE, but let’s get started on these Make-It-Yourself Wood Burnt Cutting Boards!

Cutting boards… everyone uses them, so why not give them a little twist! This project is so simple, but so practical at the same time, it makes a great gift for anyone.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own wood burnt cutting board:

Materials: Wooden Cutting Boards | Wood Burner | Hot Stamp Letters | Pencil | Pliers | Pot Holder Mitts |
I picked up my cutting boards at IKEA and my wood burning tools at JoAnn Fabrics.

Step 1: Sketch out the design you want for your cutting board with a pencil. If you’re worried about free-handing it, you can always print a phrase online and just trace it onto the board.

Step 2: Once your tool is hot, trace over your pencil lines with the wood burner.

The tool comes with a variety of tips. I used one for the outlines and one for shading the thicker letters.

I found these awesome Hot Stamp Letters at JoAnn- they attach right onto the wood burner,
and make personalization a breeze!

Allow the stamp to heat up (took about 30 seconds) then press down evenly.  Use a slight rocking motion to be sure all the edges burn evenly.

Use pliers to remove the hot letter stamp and put on a new one.  I also had pot holders on hand, just so I didn’t forget and accidentally touch the burning hot stamps!

How awesome do these letters look?! Use them to monogram your cutting board, or spell out a full name.

Whether you keep this project for yourself, or gift it to someone else, cooking will be much more enjoyable with a custom wood burnt cutting board!

How do you finish the boards? Do you rub them with cooking oil, or is there a different trick?

    • Monica says:

We didn’t finish our boards, but if you want to use them for cooking, I’d suggest any cutting board oil to coat the board.

  2. Shelly V says:

I was just wondering if you have to seal up a chopping board/block if you want to use it for meat cutting and if so what do u use?

    • Monica says:

Hi Shelly- we didn’t use any sealant because these cutting boards were just for decorative gifts, but if you wanted to use it to cook with, you can use any type of cutting board oil.
