Hi Guys! Today is a super fun day for East Coast Creative! I’m sharing 12 Make-It-Yourself Holiday Gift Ideas with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on Live! with Kelly & Michael. Hopefully, you can watch the segment (9am EST), but even if you can’t, this is your lucky day… I’m sharing all 12 project tutorials so that you can give some fabulous handmade gifts that your friends and family will love! You can check out the other 11 projects HERE, but first let me show you my new favorite gift in a jar!
Terrariums have been popular for a while, but they just keep getting cooler and more creative! Half the fun is actually assembling a terrarium, so this gift gives the lucky recipient everything they need to create the perfect little home for some new plants! We’ve all gotten the old cookies or cocoa in a jar, but this Make-It-Yourself gift is taking mason jar presents to the next level!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own.
Materials: Mason Jar | Mini Plastic Bags | Moss | Soil | Rocks | Succulents (live or artificial) | Terrarium Vessel | Printable Graphic Insert | Washi Tape |
One word on plants… I love real succulents, but not everyone has or wants a green thumb. Artificial succulents have come a long way, and I love the selection I found at JoAnn Fabrics. I actually used the faux ones on Kelly & Michael and they looked great! Real or faux will work just fine, but don’t feel guilty if you go the artificial route… I’m giving you permission!
Step 1: Fill 3 mini plastic bags with each of the following: moss, soil, and rocks. Seal the bags with washi tape.
First soil…
tape to seal
then rocks…
and lastly, moss…
You can likely make 3-5 terrarium kits from your supplies. Each kit only needs a little.
Step 2: Place the 3 plastic bags into the mason jar and then place succulents on top.
Step 3: Print and cut out the FREE terrarium kit graphic, pictured below (CLICK HERE to download), and slip it inside your mason jar with the image facing out.
That’s it! The terrarium can actually be planted right in the mason jar or your gift can include a vessel to plant the terrarium in. I love these round terrariums that I grabbed at JoAnn- the flat bottom allows it to rest on a surface or you can choose it hang it!
