Hey Guys! This post is part of The Weekender Makeover Series. A DIY Makeover web series in partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement. You can watch Season 1 + 2 on your streaming devices or by subscribing to Lowe’s YouTube channel.

The DIY shibori wallpaper was one of the most impactful projects in Episode 1 of The Weekender (Watch HERE), and I’ve got all the details for you right here!

Shibori Wallpaper DIY The Weekender

shibori

You’ve probably heard of Shibori by now, even if you don’t consider yourself trend savvy– it’s everywhere, and it’s also got a pretty price tag. I’m always looking for ways to get the look for less, and this hack is pretty much mind-blowing and easy. Custom wallpaper for $35 a roll? Sign me up!

Here’s a little video tutorial and all the steps are detailed for you below.

Step 1: Get yourself a few rolls of this Graham and Brown paintable wallpaper

Step 2:  Measure out your panels of paper- allowing about 2 extra inches at the top and bottom.  It’s easier to pre-cut all of these pieces now, so that you can easily match up your pattern as you paint it on.

Step 3:  Measure and then mark out a 5 inch x 5 inch grid lightly with pencil. Use a ruler or level to keep the lines straight.

Step 4: Using a spray bottle, lightly mist your wallpaper with water.  You want it wet, but not soaking.

Step 5: Dip a 4-inch chip brush in indigo paint – We used Dyed Indigo in the HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams line-and freehand paint over your grid a few lines at a time. You don’t need these lines to be perfect- shibori dyed fabric isn’t perfect and we want to get that look! Create an X mark over two of the boxes, then make a T.. basically a star when you’re done. Finally, dab the intersection of the lines with your brush, creating a blurring effect in the center.

Step 6: Spray with more water. You want the paint to bleed and look like fabric dye, so don’t be shy with the water.

PRO TIP: You don’t need, and won’t be able to get every piece to look identical to the others. That’s okay! The color variance adds to the style!

Step 7: Repeat this process on each sheet of wallpaper.  One important thing to remind you guys of here… you want your grid lines to match up piece to piece, so keep consistent with your 5 inch grid starting from the top of each individual piece of wallpaper.

Step 8: Allow your paper to dry at least 2 hours before hanging it up on the wall

Thank you for sharing! I think it’s a beautiful design. I think if I were to do it, I would make the diagonal lines a different color (like dark red to match the throw pillows!) to contrast the blue and give it an extra splash of color. But I still think it looks beautiful either way.
