Tiny Kitchen Makeover: Watch Below
You might want to grab some tissues for this one- Georgette is one of the most hysterical, upbeat, encouraging people I’ve been able to work with. Sorry if I go all girl power on you for a second, but this lady is just the queen of empowerment- she’s a strong, confident, single woman that decided she didn’t need anyone else to help her fulfill her dream of owning her own home. She did however, need a wee bit of help in the kitchen design department- ha! That’s where I come in…. Check it out!
If you know me, you know I’m one of the least emotional people on the planet, BUT… Georgette might have even gotten me (and my whole crew for that matter) a little teared up. Sometimes it can feel like interior design and makeovers are all about things, and stuff, but this makeover episode (and actually this whole Weekender Series) was such a solid reminder of just how important HOME is and having a space you love, that feels just right for you. It was a pretty unforgettable weekend for everyone involved.
Okay- enough mushy stuff! Let’s talk about this room makeover!

This kitchen had a serious dead zone going on… the right corner was completely unused. I think I might have found some old phone books just hanging out- no joke! I wanted to create a little breakfast nook where Georgette could have her morning coffee.
It was a just a tiny nook, but it felt like a big challenge to the homeowner! Sometimes the small spaces are the hardest! We worked together and made custom bench seating that fit this little space perfectly! Instead of having custom cushions made, we picked up outdoor patio cushions and made the bench to fit their depth. Worked like a charm and saved a ton of cash!
Giving purpose and style to this dead zone in her kitchen really made the whole room feel twice as large!
We swapped out the generic dome light for a sleek, modern pendant.
The combination of the new pendant and the perfect, little square rug really grounded this area and gave it new life. That square grey rug is one of my favorite recent finds- check it out here.
The oak cabinets were in perfectly good working order, but they were just screaming – builder grade blah- Lowe’s recently introduced a new Cabinet Paint that’s an enamel, but also washable and easy to apply- it was my first time trying it out and I was SOLD! I’ve used in on 2 more projects since then and recommended it to about 20 people as well.
They look so.much.better! We used HGTV’s Sherwin Williams Retreat SW607 and it was the perfect calming color. We also swapped out the hardware- always such an easy kitchen update!
The laminate backsplash had to go- that was a no brainer. The overall style we wanted for this kitchen was Transitional. Transitional style is basically what you’d get if traditional and contemporary got together and had a little style baby. It has elements of both mixed together in all the right ways! The glass mosaic tile definitely had the contemporary genes.
Isn’t it so pretty? It was my first time using glass mosaic tile and I’m so glad we did. It was crazy easy to install (it comes in 12×12 ish sheets) and was easy to cut and apply to the wall. Once the grout was dry and we washed off the tile- I knew it was just right for Georgette!
For the glass mosaic tile, I’d recommend using a light colored grout like we did- it really let’s the focus be on the tile itself. Save the dark grout for your subway tile like we used in this Philly row home kitchen makeover.
The new cabinet color and backsplash made Georgette’s appliances look sleek and contemporary.
It’s amazing what a little paint and tile can do!
I had fun adding little accessories and personal touches to the space. Of course I used my favorite magnetic succulents- they’re usually in stock at Lowe’s and each season I’ve found all different colors and styles. I have 3 on my fridge and they’ve totally passed the Mangin Kid test- not a single one as fallen off the fridge, as my husband predicted they would. Take that Debbie Downer! Ha!
In the nook area I added a floating shelf and some cookbooks, art, and accessories. I’m not always a fan of art with phrases, but this piece was perfect for Georgette’s amazing personality!
My favorite shot of the whole room is this one… with the happiest of homeowners.
