Massive Master Bedroom Makeover: Watch Below

This week’s episode of The Weekender, had some of my very favorite projects of season 1.  If you’ve been waiting for the wooden headboard project on The Weekender graphics, well wait no longer my friends!

Aaron and Becca had a really unique problem… WAY TOO MUCH space!  They moved out of NYC because they wanted more room to raise their growing family, fell in love with this house, but almost didn’t buy it because of how overwhelming the master bedroom was.  Remember when new construction builders thought that the master bedroom should be able to double as a small country?  Yeah, that’s when this home was built!

I honestly wondered if we could get this room done in just one weekend, because we had to paint all the walls and the trim… but I’m never one to back down from a challenge, so we gave it a shot!

This room had some serious WOW factor when we were done with it.  I had this vision in my head for what I wanted it to look like and I’ve gotta say, it turned out even better than I had expected!!

Sitting area numero uno…

Sitting area numero dos… It was awesome that they had this sectional we could use.  Yes, that’s right, 2 sitting areas, a full sectional, and king sized bed and the room still had plenty of space!  Bonkers I tell ya!

Aaron and Becca just welcomed their new baby girl home last week, and I got an awesome message from Becca letting me know how much she’s enjoying her new bedroom, especially with all the time she’s spending in there feeding a newborn.  She told me how thankful she was that they set aside the weekend and worked with me to make this the bedroom they’d always hoped for.  I’ve gotta say, feedback like that… It just doesn’t get any better and makes me love my job and this makeover series even more! #TheWeekenderRules and is baby approved- lol!

As with every Weekender makeover, I focus on 5 main projects.  For this bedroom, I threw it back to my “Knock It Off!” roots a bit and did some epic furniture knock of projects!

Here’s the Big 5

1- DIY Console Table – Crate & Barrel Knock Off

console-table

This console table is the best freaking knock-off because it looks so much like the original and was really simple to build. The original cost over $1,000 and we made ours for under $100!

Here’s the Crate and Barrel Inspiration

I’ll be sharing the DIY project tutorial for this baby really soon!

2- DIY Headboard – West Elm Knock Off

headboard3Another knock off win! West Elm has this bed listed at $1600 for a king (and that’s on sale!) we built our headboard for under $100!  I’ll be sharing a tutorial here on the blog, but if you’re looking for one right away, Lowe’s has the tutorial live – Click HERE!

I really, really love how this project turned out.  The combo of the rustic wood with the teal wall makes such a dramatic statement.

3- DIY Faux Fireplace

This home is new, and has lots of upgrades and modern features, but it was slightly lacking the the charm and character department. We used some pine boards and a whole bunch of molding to add a bit’o charm to the formal sitting area.

4- DIY Magazine Rack

magazine-rack

I’d been wanting to try my hand at a magazine rack, and it was so simple!  Instead of hitting the fabric store, I actually cut up a curtain panel that I saw (and fell in love with) at Lowe’s.  Just some wooden dowels and copper fittings and we had a custom magazine rack that worked great in the sitting area and perfectly fit with the rest of the room.

5- PAINT

Project 5 was paint… and so, so much of it.  The room had beige walls and beige trim.  It was kind of awful.

My saving grace for all the painting was the new Infinity paint from Sherwin Williams & Lowe’s.  We didn’t have to waste time doing a million coats.  The main walls took one coat and some touch-ups.  Two coats for the dark teal wall- dark colors always need a few coats, and the trim was 1 and done!  We NEVER would have finished over the weekend if I didn’t have really high quality paint.

The grey walls, crisp white trim, and drama mama accent wall changed the entire tone and feel of this space.  Poor Aaron & Becca now have the fun job of painting the rest of their entire home… it’s beige on beige everywhere! Yikes!

There are so many awesome furniture pieces and accessories in this bedroom and I’ve put them all below for you.  Some of my favorites are the plug-in wall sconces (no electrical work required), the benches at the end of the bed, and the wicker accent chairs… well, actually I kind of love it all.  Everything is linked in the slider below.
