Hi Guys! Today is a super fun day for East Coast Creative! I’m sharing 12 Make-It-Yourself Holiday Gift Ideas with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on Live! with Kelly & Michael. Hopefully, you can watch the segment (9am EST), but even if you can’t, this is your lucky day… I’m sharing all 12 project tutorials so that you can give some fabulous handmade gifts that your friends and family will love! You can check out the other 11 projects HERE, but you have to learn how to make this clay jewelry dish first!
You’ve probably seen a similar dish in your favorite retail store for big money, but I’ve got a great, cheaper alternative for you!
Here’s what you’ll need to make a jewelry dish:
Materials: Clay Tools | Polymer Clay | Oven | Oven Safe Bowl (for shaping) | Liquid Gilding
I picked up all of my materials atJoAnn Fabrics– my go-to craft store.
Step 1: Cut your clay into pieces.
There’s no exact size rule here, but you’ll want more of the colors you want to be most prominent and less of the accent colors. This is the amount I used.
Step 2: Roll out each clay block into a “snake” about 6 inches long. If your clay seems too firm, you can actually pop it in the microwave for ten seconds. That worked like a charm for me!
Your rolls will vary in thickness and that’s okay.
Step 3: Gather your “snakes” together and begin twisting them.
Turn your left and right hands in opposite directions.
Step 4: Once they’re tightly twisted, use your hands and roll them together into one big “snake.” Roll it until it doubles in length.
Once it has doubled in length, fold it in half.
Step 5: Twist the clay again with your left and right hands going in opposite directions.
Roll that into another smooth “snake”
Step 6: Now make a ball with the clay. It doesn’t have to be perfect, this is just to marble the colors even more.
Step 7: Use a rolling pin and roll out the ball to about a 1/4 inch thickness.
Step 8: Use a 6 inch bowl as a guide and cut your clay into a circle.
Peel away the edges
Step 9: Now place the clay inside an oven safe bowl so that it too is shaped like a dish. You will actually bake it right in the bowl. You can use all kinds of shapes- a ramekin works really well too!
Step 10: Bake at 230 degrees for 20 minutes OR whatever the directions on your clay suggest. All clay brands vary, so make sure you double check. After baking, allow your bowl to cool and then remove it from the dish.
Step 11: Once fully dry, paint the edges with liquid gilding to give it a high-end, polished look.
These might be one of my favorite gifts in our Make-It-Yourself series today! They look amazing and to think they’re just rolled up clay- it’s up to you if you want to tell your friends & family just how simple it was to make. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me!

Love this idea!! I can only imagine what the finished product looks like because I can’t seem to load a completed picture from Pinterest or my browser, but I think it would be gorgeous and will be trying one myself when I get to town for supplies. 🙂
