hey there! I'm monica

I pride myself on making amazing style and design accessible for everyone, regardless of location, budget, or ability! My design philosophy is rooted in authenticity + attainability - If I can do it, you can too! My work has been featured in countless publications, but I take the most pride in homeowners that have been personally inspired by my DIY ideas and have tried something in their own homes!

I am so looking forward to this weekend!!  Eric and I are taking our older two kids to NYC Friday night as a special treat for them, we’re staying over,  and I have the Home Depot NYC Garden Party on Saturday.  The weather looks great and I’m really excited about it!  I’m acting as the hostess for the event, but I also get the fun job of working with attendees to decorate terra cotta pots with paint pens and markers.  I love the Home Depot team- they totally get me and know a project like that is right up my alley!  The fabulous Kristin from The Hunted Interior hosted the Atlanta Garden Party, and her pots were kind of amazing, so I know I have to bring my A-Game!  I thought I’d share a little Terra Cotta Pot Inspiration today so you can create your own fun planters at home or hopefully with me on Saturday in NYC!

1Terra Cotta Pot Ideas

I love looking at fabric for pattern inspiration and you know I adore Spoonflower, so I creeped around there for a while and got tons of ideas!

I love the cross motif right now, and I like the imperfection of these ones.  There’s not a chance I could draw perfect cross shapes multiple times.

Again, this pattern is imperfect (perhaps that should be my middle name- it’s actually Bridgette btw…) but it would be really simple to recreate on a terra cotta pot.  Screen Shot 2014-04-30 at 9.40.44 PM

This one would definitely be a tad more challenging, because the overlapping needs to be neat to look good, but I think I might try it!

I don’t think I could freehand a perfect Ikat pattern, but I like the linear lines that combine to make this ikat.

I love the geek chic style and it might be fun to see if we can free hand a few fun styles of “nerdy” glasses (as my kids call them).  I love the variety of colors too!  Geek Chic East Coast Creative

I wouldn’t normally be drawn to flowers, but these quirky ones are so fun!  I’ve gotta practice my technique a bit, but I think I can give ’em a whirl! Rose Pattern East Coast Creative

Now, you’ve gotta make me a promise… if we’re hanging out in NYC at the Garden Party Event, still pretend to think my ideas are creative okay?  I mean preparation is just part of the creative process right??  Which pattern is your fav?  I’d love to know which ones you like and think I should try out on Saturday!  I’ll be posting my planters and fun updates on the event on Instagram.  Make sure you’re following me on IG  @EastCoastCreative and the hashtag #springmadesimple  If you make any fun painted pots at home, make sure you tag me and use the hashtag so that me and my peeps from The Home Depot can take a peek!

So, don’t forget to join me at The Home Depot NYC Garden Party this Saturday, May 3rd from 1 pm to 4 pm. I’ll be at the Flatiron Plaza on 23rd Street and Broadway in New York City working on my terra cotta pots, learning how to make tasty food from a famous chef, and getting some gardening tips from expert Gardeniere Pamela Reed.

If you plan on attending or think you’ll be in the area stop by The Home Depot Facebook events page to RSVP (you can come even without an RSVP too!) If you can’t make it (boo!) , but would still love to get some helpful planting tips and tricks from The Home Depot, sign up for their awesome Garden Club.

**I’m working with the Home Depot for their NYC Garden Party Event- so this post is sponsored, but my design inspiration and excitement for the party is 100% legit! **

    Love the nerdy glasses!

Shine a light! You’re going to do great. Will we get to see you on TV?

My sis used big terra cotta pots as centerpieces at her wedding reception. We sponged them with off-white paint to dirty them up a bit, then when that dried, we wrote snippets of love poems on them with a silver Sharpie, wrapping the script around the entire pot. Then she filled them with white sand and stuffed each pot with about 20 slender taper candles. They were stunning.

Whatever you do, it will be gorgeous! And only two kids, wow, easy and fun!
