I decided it was far time I let you all in on my psychic powers… yup I can predict things. Like right now Jess is reading this and shaking her head and possibly rolling her eyes. See- It’s kind of amazing! Today I’m using my mad skills to predict the design trends of 2014. Let’s get started shall we?
Copper & Mixed Metals:
I’m still loving mixing and matching metals and I think copper is going to be big this year. I’m loving it because it gives a space a similar feel to brass and gold, but with a little different twist!
Teal & Turquoise:
I love teal and I think that teal and turquoise will be everywhere. I know Pantone says Wild Orchid and Benjamin Moore says Breath of Fresh Air, but I’m still thinking were gonna see more of the deeper blue tones. I think it works in the mid-century modern styles, in the Aztec inspired looks, and even in a preppy glam.
Honey Wood Tones:
If you asked me even just two years ago if I would ever consider having honey toned wood in my house I would have thrown up a little in my mouth. Gross I know, but true. It’s so weird how our preferences can change so much and so quickly. I’m really hoping one of these days my preference for cookie dough turns to vegetables (#notlikely). So, here we are in 2014 and I’m loving the warm honey tones. And now I’m thinking about Wreck It Ralph and how he had the “Honey Glow in his cheeks” (It was definitely my favorite kid movie of 2013)
I digress… it happens sometimes when I’m being all psychic. But, I do think that honey and dare I say blonde woods will be hot this year.
Macramé:
Natural fibers have been trending for a while, but I think we’re gonna see a strong use of macrame continuing into 2014. The technique of knotting string and yarn has gone in and out of style in a pretty cyclical fashion. If I look back at my baby pictures, my family was rocking’ the macrame big time in the 80’s! I think that it’s going to be fun to see the modern take on it this year. I’m sure Urban Outfitters will inspire me to knock off a few fun projects!
Fur:
Not creepy old lady in the fur coat fur, but totally legit fur (don’t go calling PETA on me okay!) I love the use of white fur- we actually used some in a recent episode of “Knock It Off”, but I can’t show you yet! I think we’re going to continue seeing fun fur rugs, pillows, and hopefully lots more!
Filtered Black & White:
You might be wondering what “filtered” B&W means… yeah, well, I made that up. See, I think black and white is still going to stick around and be used a lot, but I think it’s going to be toned down a bit. Almost like softened just a tad. I love me some crisp b&w, but think of it like you put on your black eyeliner and then use the little smudgy tool on the other end to blur it. Yeah, like that.
Art & Watercolors:
Okay, before you say it, I know, I know Art is always part of decor, but I think we’re going to see more unique pieces used and lots of watercolors still. I love finding cool thrifted art and just as much as I love that, I equally hate art from Kohls. It’s really, really bad (no offense if you have it, but it’s really bad). I think we’ll see lots of florals and tiny woodland creatures in art too!
Okay, talking about animals… there’s always an “it” animal. I was trying to explain this to Eric and he was beyond flabbergasted. He just doesn’t understand how an animal can be “in” and then “out” … I gave him about 100 examples, but it was a losing battle- he just doesn’t get it! 2013 was the year of the fox. Early 2013 had some residual owl, but then the fox came on pretty strong. Also, any kind of faux taxidermy was HUGE, but the one “in” animal was definitely Mr. Fox.
But now we know what the fox really says… “Adios”. He’s done for now. Since he’s headed to the land of ex-trendy animals (it’s a very sad place) I thought it would be fun to ask some blogger pals their prediction for the 2014 animal trend of the year!
2014 Animal Trend Predictions:
This graphic makes me laugh every time I look at it!
Jenna from SAS Interiors thinks the bear will be hot hot hot. I’m guessing she was thinking a bit more of a cute or graphic arts bear, but I thought I should remind her that they’re big, bad and scary! Jenna- don’t try and hug one okay? hehe.
Me- I happen to think the Narwhal needs some attention. I mean if they’re cool enough to be in Elf, then they’re a legit “it” animal right?
Beckie from Infarrantly Creative actually is still on Team Fox! She thinks that with the song and all it will still be really popular this year. I dunno Beckie, I saw fox decor on clearance at Target. That’s like the kiss of death. Ha!
Lindsay from The White Buffalo Styling Co. is hoping for the buffalo, but I sorta, kinda think she’s biased! Although, I wouldn’t mind if she was right. I think the buffalo is a crazy, cool animal!
Shelley from The House of Smiths had me laughing out loud with her prediction or should I say predictions… here, just read the email…
I would die if the dolphin figurine (complete with attached splashing wave) came back… Ack! LOL While I think that we’ll see a LOT of the same pig, fox, bulldog, starfish, deer and bird, etc… I think that they’ll be presented in just lots of awesome new ways. Maybe as geometric, white, gold or copper figurines (?) or perhaps even as more natural wood or faux fur type prints & wall pieces (???) Ok, is that off topic? Let’s see, if I had to pick an animal, I’d go with the giraffe. Really, I just think that safari type animals are going to make more of an appearance this year… Ok, I’m done now. LOL
I think she was just covering all her bases, so it’s giraffe, dolphin, pig, fox, bulldog, starfish, deer, bird… etc… Thanks for narrowing it down for us Shelley! hehe!
Jamielyn from I Heart Naptime thinks it’s the year for Bambi! I’ve gotta admit that the deer can be pretty, cute, and classy all at once. It has all the requirements for an “it” animal!
Tracie from Beneath My Heart is a hedgehog fan and who wouldn’t be with how cute they look in pictures! I would totally be willing to sport a fun hedgehog tee-shirt on an episode of “Knock It Off” (I seem to wear a lot of animal shirts I’ve been told.
Lindsay from Makely says this year has gone to the dogs! I’m thinking she’s talking about slightly more stately dogs, but come on, who doesn’t love a ridiculous pup with a hair bow!
And finally, Sherry from Young House Love is feelin’ the llama. Okay, she actually said flamingo or llama, but I thought this picture of the llama was just too funny to pass up! I have no clue if the llama will ever be the “it” animal, but if anyone could predict a hot trend, it would be Sherry!
Phew well that was fun, now we’ve gotta wait and see what 2014 brings. Obviously, I need to start a project with all my predictions, so that at least they’re in one room!
maybe if honey wood makes a come back I won’t hate my 90s kitchen cabinets so much! haha. I am all over the industrial copper/metal look though. 🙂
Soooo interesting about copper! My husband just made me two copper light fixtures for Christmas, one of them inspired by your big basket fixture (I linked to your post). You can see them if you click on my name.
Thanks for the inspiration.
That is so awesome Laura, I can’t wait to see it. Thanks for linking back to us and for reading the blog, so happy to hear we have inspired you.
So funny I was totally thinking about what the next “it” animal will be. We’ve recently seen the owl, stag heads, bulldog, and the fox. I hate to say it but I don’t think the Narwhal is going to be “it” this year lol. My prediction is the …. aw I don’t know. You guys predicted some great ones! Lesley
Love this post! You girls are the best. Can’t wait to see what 2014 brings! xoxo
We love everyone’s animal trend predictions, they are all so different too, thanks for joining us on the post Jamielyn! 🙂
Those animal predictions are hilarious! The hedgehog is the cutest, so I’m putting my money on that little guy. Either that, or sloths.
Oh sloths are really cute Ceci and I just love the little hedgehog too. But I’m still holding out for the narwhal!
Love this post and thanks for including me 🙂 I am hoping for the buffalo, but am TOTALLY biased 🙂 Just had to say it because I love the shape of this animal. Silhouettes, anyone? Of course, my husband’s guess of the emu or armadillo would be nice too, haha 🙂
We’re so happy to have you on the blog Lindsay, def love me some buffalo silhouettes! 🙂 Thanks for joining us on the animal trend!
Animal of 2014. I’m thinking the giraffe only bc on the Facebook question that going around I used the exact same image for my profile. Maybe I’m a little psychic too! Trends…teal is my fav color so #winning
That’s so true about that Facebook giraffe question, it probably will trend from that! Thanks for reading the blog and stopping by today Beth Marie! 🙂
I have to comment again and say thank you for the warning about Kohls art. It’s not art. Right on.
Almost anything is better than cheap new prints. I found my clipper-ship lithograph at Salvation Army for $2, and looked it up on Ebay. It’s worth about $100.
Your predictions are so fun. I predict most of them are accurate.

Just saw the lights, they look amazing!! Thrifted art is always so much cooler! 🙂
It’s all teal all the time in my living room! Old house had a teal wall above the fireplace inspired by YHL old DR built ins. New house hosts a teal velvet Thomasville tufted sofa (the Ella) and I vow to never let us part for that sofa is worth of a place in a will! Check it out here: http://www.putterhome.com/2013/09/photo-collage-1.html. World Market has has some really affordable teal sofas and chairs in the past so that would be a good place for a low-cost option.
Hi Brooke,
Wow, that couch is GORGEOUS!! I love your wall of art as well. Thanks for sharing with us, I’m really love teal this year.
I think yellows and purples (not necessarily Pantone’s Radiant Orchid – that’s going to be a hard sell in home decor). And I think we’re going to see more horses. It is the year of the horse after all!
Hi Jessica,
I just realized that about it being the year of the horse, that probably will help with the animal trend! Yellow and Purple are gorgeous together. Thanks for stopping by the blog today! : )
Thanks for including my peacock blue drawing room on your blog. I’ve since sold that house but i miss those lacquer walls!! Colette
[…] and Monica, the duo behind East Coast Creative gathered up what they think will be all the rage this year. And I have to say I mostly agree! Turquoise? Yes. Fur? Absolutely. Black and white. It’s […]
I can’t believe no one said elephant! I feel like I’m seeing them everywhere! Well…count this as my vote. Elephant FTW! 🙂
Love the predictions and the muted black and whites. I hope it’s still ‘in’ when my messy, sticky, constantly grubby fingered, 5 year old leaves home! As far as the animal goes, I predict the RABBIT!!!! x
