Mason-Jar-Chandelier-SMALL1

Sometimes there are projects that fail miserably, and sometimes there are projects that turn out better than you anticipate. This mason jar chandelier falls in that second category. We loved the way this light turned out and believe it or not, it was pretty easy to make and cost us less than $100! You could go out and buy a similar chandelier from Pottery Barn if you’re willing to shell out $400, but since our entire room budgets on Knock it Off are often close to that number, we decided to jump in and tackle this on on our own.

Mason jars are everywhere right now- crafts, decor, lighting- everywhere! You can get a dozen mason jars at the grocery store for around $10- we only used 9 jars for our light fixture, so you can use the other jars to actually can something. Or whatever people do with mason jars.

Step 1: Decide on the size of the ceiling plate (what the lights and wires will attach to) and cut down inexpensive pine, MDF, or plywood- as in our case. Add small pieces plywood to the sides of your ceiling plate to create a shallow box that will attach to the ceiling. Paint the box whatever color you want- we went with black. Simple and classic.

Step 2: Figure out the placement of the lights/wires and drill holes in the appropriate places. We liked the look of holes that were off-set. It almost looks like a zig-zag pattern when you look at the holes from the top. Make sure to use a bit that’s large enough for the lamp cord to pass through.

Step 3: Cut the wires for each mason jar to the appropriate length. We varied the lengths to add interest and also so that the jars didn’t clank against each other when hanging.

Step 4: String the lamp wire through the holes in the ceiling plate and tie into a knot. Strip the ends of each lamp wire cord to expose the wire. Attach all of the wires to a wire nut and then screw the box into the ceiling. At this point, the box will be up on the ceiling with wires hung at varying lengths hanging down.

Step 5: Drill a hole in the middle of each lid, and two smaller holes on either side so that the jars don’t overheat.  Attach one end of the lamp wire to a keyless socket (you can find these in the electrical section at Lowes or Home Depot), screw in the light bulb, and slide the lid on the top so that it fits against the socket. Funny story: we were all ready to screw the light bulbs in and reveal this awesome light fixture, and as we tried to screw the jar on, they didn’t fit. We got light bulbs that were too big! Oops! So make sure you get the small size. Screw the jar onto the lid and you’re done!  This light totally set the tone for this entire room makeover- it casts a really nice, warm glow over the whole room and looks fabulous. Win win!

    • Monica says:

      Hi Mrs. Mike!

Perhaps you can make a smaller one?! Thanks for stopping by and reading our blog, so glad you love what we did.

  2. Amanda says:

I LOVE this! wonder if I can do this in my rental and then just patch the ceiling holes later on…….. Maybe. 🙂

  3. Heidi says:

Beautiful! And thanks for the step-by-step. I’m wondering if you have issues with the jars getting too hot from the lights?

    • Matilda says:

Heidi, if you use LED you’re not gonna have any issues! LEDs have no heat in the light beam, which can be an advantage in some cases, for example when you want to shed light on/close to sensitive objects.

    • Dori says:

You can bake with mason jars, I doubt heat from a lightbulb would hurt. 🙂

I am confused as to what you are using for the cords. You never say. Are they lamps you took apart? How do you hook it up to the power source? This is way cute and would look awesome in our new-to-us farm house, but there is so much info missing here there is no way I can even think of doing this.

  10. jane polacek says:

is it possible to just use the cords with a switch on each.I too am a little confused about the power sourse and as a renter ,dont want to take time or trouble to do much electrical work.

  12. Karen says:

I, too, would love to see how to connect to existing ceiling power source. Multiple cords (8 -10?) all connecting to presumably one electrical outlet. Is that the part where the instructions read: tie the cords together, strip them and attach to wire nut? I think so, but the pictures that follow are not helpful to that end. Sorry, I’m more of a visual learner. Great idea and beautiful!

  15. Chasity says:

Hi I love the idea of the lights & it looks great !!! But how did you run electricity to all bulbs & what watt do you use ? I know it’s only two wires but it seems it would be fire hazard if all open wires are not in junction box??

  17. Mary-Cate says:

What are you using for wires and how are you connecting each “light” to the main power source in the ceiling?

    Thanks!

  18. Jin says:

i am having difficult time to put it on the ceiling
can you explain how did you put it on ?
and what type of material you used to put it ?
    that will be really helpful
    thank you

  21. Sarah says:

How do you hang it to the ceiling once its done. I feel like the instructions are missing the last step of mounting it to the ceiling. I would love to be able to do this, but would need to know how to attach it once complete. Thanks!

  22. Jackie says:

Is there a supply list for this tutorial?
