hey there! I'm monica

I pride myself on making amazing style and design accessible for everyone, regardless of location, budget, or ability! My design philosophy is rooted in authenticity + attainability - If I can do it, you can too! My work has been featured in countless publications, but I take the most pride in homeowners that have been personally inspired by my DIY ideas and have tried something in their own homes!

I’m so glad it’s December, and not just for Christmas… I’m so ready to be done looking at straggly beards!  I get that Movember is for a good cause, but wow it really reveals who can grow a beard and who (like my husband) just doesn’t have a chance in the world!  If you somehow missed Movember or No-Shave November, it’s a campaign to bring awareness to Men’s Health. If you didn’t know it was a “thing” I wonder if you just thought half the men in your life were getting uglier by the day? Or did Matt and Al and the gang lose a bet?

Here are a few of my fav Movember funnies…

Haha- so true. And Perv Curve… I spit out my drink when I read that.

That would 100% be my husband.  I love him dearly, love his baby face and we can completely own the fact that he will never be the burley beard type (or any facial hair for that matter!)

I guess with all the beard hub-bub, I had facial hair on the brain when I did my Christmas decorating.

I proudly present Santa Beard Silhouette Art!

Because we all know that the Man in Red is the original Movember Man!

No Shave November

Materials you’ll need to make your own:

-Blank Canvases

-Beard Silhouettes (click here for my Silhouette file or  for a jpeg you can cut our yourself)

-Spray adhesive

-Spray paint

I started out with 3 blank canvases- I chose square ones just because I like ’em and I thought it would look a bit more like art.

Jess and I are huge fans of PicMonkey! I do all my editing in PS, but use PicMonkey a ton for layering  stuff on top.  Their seasonal graphics are always so fun and as soon as I saw these beards, I knew I was going to use them for a canvas project!

I saved each beard as a jpeg and then opened my Silhouette software.  I had a royal battle with my silhouette cutting out my detailed beards, because sometimes I’m a bonehead.  As soon as I remembered how to do what I wanted to do, it took me about 5 minutes to cut the beard shapes.  This is the type of project that a Silhouette is so helpful for!  It would have taken me forever with an X-acto knife to cut out all the little details.  The Silhouette followed the exact lines and made my template crisp and sharp!

Don’t forget that right now Silhouette has the best discount of the year!  This is the kind of gift that you buy for yourself, wrap, put under the tree with a tag that says it’s from your husband and then Christmas morning is magical for everyone!!  Haha.  So my mom used to do this all the time growing up- my dad never quite knew what he was “giving” my my mom each year.  Click HERE and Don’t’ forget to use the coupon code to get the full discount!

I sprayed the back side of my beard templates with spray adhesive and then firmly pressed them onto my canvases, making sure the sides were sealed well.  You don’t want paint seeping under.

As soon as they were attached, I covered each canvas with a coat of red spray paint.  Make sure you stand above and spray down, so you don’t get any under your template.

Almost right away, I stick a fingernail under one corner and peel off them template. I don’t want it to get stuck on the canvas.

The result is instant gratification!

I’m giving way too much away in this picture, I should have made you wait for my holiday home tour, but I wanted you to see how fun the canvases look on the wall in my kids’ playroom! You could do these in any color, but I love how the pop of red works with my other decorations.

I’ve shared a few of the projects already, so check out the tutorials for my fabric tree, hex fireplace accent, string art Christmas ornaments, and  illuminated deer art.

And if you’ve been around here for a while, you know that I made my first Christmas silhouette art on The Nate Show, for Jess’ Christmas makeover.  You can check out the reindeer art here.

You better watch out, when your husband’s 50 and only looks 30, he’s going to be a hot commodity! And plust, the whole manly-beard-thing-is-sexy is just a fad. No one wants to make out with a woolly mammoth!!
