hey there! I'm monica

I pride myself on making amazing style and design accessible for everyone, regardless of location, budget, or ability! My design philosophy is rooted in authenticity + attainability - If I can do it, you can too! My work has been featured in countless publications, but I take the most pride in homeowners that have been personally inspired by my DIY ideas and have tried something in their own homes!

learn more about ME + MY BIZ

I had a bit of a blogger vs. real life dilemma with my holiday decorating… We’re in Disney this week and even though our wonderful house sitters will be home, I thought it was silly to get a real tree before we left.  But… I needed to get ready for my Christmas house tour next week… What’s a girl to do?!?

Then, Jess and I were at IKEA picking up a few things for a “Knock It Off” makeover and we saw this Christmas Tree table cloth…  I was in love and knew I had my tree solution!  No one said a table cloth has to go on a table!

Modern Christmas Tree

Isn’t it so fun and different?

I mean obviously we’ll add a real tree in the other room, but this could be my very favorite new Christmas decoration!  The tree is cool on it’s own, but the pompom garland just puts it over the top for me!

Christmas Garland

I’d seen a million pompom garlands around the past few years, but I’d never made one of my own- Oh my word, they’re so incredibly easy! I have to fight the strong urge to garland my whole world!

Here’s how I made the garland…

I started out with a few bags of pompoms in varying sizes.

pompoms

I bought an embroidery needle and got to work stringing my poms. I couldn’t believe how quickly it went by and how imperfectly I could do it and it still worked like a charm.  You don’t have to be super specific about getting it perfectly through the middle, so that means, I could watch TV and string at the same time.  SCORE one for me!

I wanted more of a retro, mid-century vibe, so I used all the colors and put them on randomly, without any pattern. poms

I used thumb tacks to string it in a loose zig-zag pattern.

 Tree Wall Hanging

Modern Christmas Ideas

As soon as I bought the fabric at IKEA I had a clear vision of what I wanted it to look like on the wall and I knew it had to involve presents!

Christmas Wrapping Paper

Funny story… Jess came over last week to help me finish up my decorating and pull everything together.  I asked her if she could wrap presents and handed her plain white paper.  She took it and then paused a little bit, looked at the plain white boxes I had and asked me if I was sure I needed her to wrap them.  Ha!  That’s what best friends are for.  To tell you when you’re about to waste an hour wrapping white boxes in white paper.

Christmas Presents

I had bought some fun washi tape at Target and the super cute tags at Michael’s. They were so inexpensive and really make the presents pop!  And just to be clear, these are placebo presents… fakers… Wrapped to look good, and completely empty.  I do that under my real tree too, because I like the look of presents, but we don’t bring out the real ones until Christmas eve.  Modern Tree

It’s a fun, modern, whimsical, take on a Christmas tree.  This idea would also be perfect if you’re traveling for the Holidays or just don’t feel like the mess of a traditional tree this year!

Modern Christmas Tree

If you missed any recent posts, you can check out my fireplace makeover, string art ornaments, and a bit of real life as I shared about “The Santa Talk” and how it all went down in our house.

I’d love to know what you think of my modern, fabric tree.

How many trees do you have each year- are any of them non-traditional?

  1. That is so awesome! What a great idea! I love the pom garland on the “tree”, too. It gives it that extra pop! 😀

  2. Jenn LaMountain says:

Love this! Is this fabric available this year?

  3. Beth Marie says:

I LOVE this! Pom garland, washi tape, white boxes. I’m a tad controlling and want it to look a specific way. Now my kids could have their own tree with homemade ornaments and the like. Wonderful!

  4. Linda S. says:

Well, I guess I will be the first person to admit that you had me totally fooled. In my own defense, I did not look at the title of this post. I really, really thought this was a real live tree placed on top of a cabinet. Only in reading your instructions on how you assembled the garland, and then used thumb tacks to make a zig-zag pattern???? How could she place thumb tacks in tree branches???? Other than that one “give-away” I would have remained clueless!! Thanks for sharing.

    • Monica says:

Too funny Linda!! Could you imagine, thumb tacks on a real tree….hey maybe we’ll try that next year! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

  5. Jessica says:

I am totally making pom pom garland for my tree this year! I have seen bags at the dollar store…win!!

  6. Runt says:

GRRRR I need an IKEA near me!!! I want this tablecloth SO bad!!!! I am jealous, and sad. I love it!

    • Monica says:

AWW, that’s such a bummer Runt, perhaps you can find it online. Thanks for stopping by today, so happy you like what we did! xoxo

  7. […] shared a few of the projects already, so check out the tutorials for my fabric tree, hex fireplace accent, string art Christmas ornaments, and  illuminated deer […]

  8. Love it! As a family, we already decided we were going to give the money we would normally spend on a tree to the local food drive. And now you’ve given me this great idea! Thanks so much. I’m blessed. Merry Christmas.

  9. This fabric tree is just amazing! The pom pom garland adds so much to it too. Pinning now!

    • Monica says:

Thanks Gwen! I had never tried a pom-pom garland before and I can’t believe how easy it was! I’m kind of tempted to add them all over my house! lol. Thanks for reading and pinning!! Merry Christmas!

  10. So cute! I’ve been meaning to hit up Ikea for several items lately, and now I have another reason 😉

  11. Jennifer says:

Hi! I am so inspired by this… I just moved and don’t have time or money for a real tree- I even went straight to an IKEA near me but no luck- do you remember what the fabric is called? I even searched online under tablecloths and couldn’t find it!

    • Monica says:

Oh no Jennifer! That’s a bummer. Since I bought it I’ve searched online, but can’t find it anywhere. It wasn’t with fabric, it was actually with the seasonal decor right near checkout. I hope you can find one!! Thanks!! Merry Christmas!

    • Ashley says:

      Hi Jennifer!

I too had difficulty. Turns out at My Ikea it’s an 8′ curtain rather than table cloth – Hope this helps!

  12. I love that faux Christmas tree so much!! I’m pinning it right now. I couldn’t believe it came from Ikea. We just got the announcement that we would finally have an Ikea here in St. Louis. Yay, the closest has been a 5 hour drive to Chicago. Such a fun house tour! Thanks.

    • Monica says:

Thanks for your comment Dana. It’s so nice having an IKEA close by. You’re going to LOVE it!! 5 hours is way too far! 🙂 Merry Christmas!

  13. […] My two favorite Christmas projects this year is a tie! It’s between the Santa Beard Silhouettes and the Fabric Tree. […]

  14. Robin says:

I’m only putting up a small tree this year, so making pom pom garland for it should be a breeze. But I’m trying to figure out what string you used? Looks a little like embroidery floss, is that right?

  15. wow that tablecloth is amazing! And I would have done the exact same thing by adding garland etc as if it was a real tree. seriously, so cute.
