We catch some flack for painting a lot of things… that might be the case with this project. Did you know that you can easily paint exterior siding?  Yup! It’s true!!  We painted stripes on the back of this house to set it as the backdrop for our sunroom makeover!

Don’t those stripes and door look awesome and super cheerful?!?   I feel like it really took the back of the house from just plain Jane siding to something attention grabbing and worth talking about!

Here’s what you’ll need to paint your exterior siding:

Painter’s tape

Exterior paint

Small roller

We wanted to add stripes and it was easiest just to use the siding as our guide .  Make sure you tuck your painter’s tape fully under the lip of the siding.

We used foam rollers to paint the siding.  Since we’d taped it off it was a breeze.  Like lazy girl painting all the way!

We did two sections of siding per stripe and then left three unpainted sections between.  We wanted it to be bold, but not busy.

Once everything was dry, we made a fun grid of plant pails!  The tins are from IKEA and we used faux plants because the homeowners were about to take a trip to Korea (and they wouldn’t have been home to water them), but it would be really fun to plant live ones!  To attach the pails, we put one small screw through the back to each. It’s a great way to add some texture and visual interest to a sunroom (or any room for that matter) and not spend a lot of money.

And you know I’m a huge fan of painting exterior doors, but I’ve gotta say, this yellow door is just so fun! I don’t know why anyone would leave their doors builder white these days!

So, do tell… would you ever paint your siding?  What about a door?

I usually don’t comment but I just had to this morning. Thank you for sharing about your son/sons. I just love how you decided to handle a difficult situation. Very inspiring. So glad that your little guy is feeling better and back home. Reading about your strength and courage really has changed the way I am going to go about my day today. Have a great day.

    What color is that yellow?

  3. Thank you for sharing this! Our entire house is yellow siding … more of a pale yellow than what you used, though. As much as I like it, I would like to do something a bit different on my porch as well. Thank you for the inspiration!
