The DIY Hollow Core Door Hack was one of my favorite projects in Episode 1 of The Weekender (Watch HERE), this room had a lot of doors… 4 in a smallish space, so instead of trying to hide them, I used a little hack to make them a stand out feature in the room! Check out the details below.
This is one of the easiest and most impactful DIY hacks in my arsenal. Half of America’s got some hollow core doors in their home somewhere, and let’s face it, they aren’t your favorite, but they could be with a few simple additions! Here’s what you’ll need to transform your sad, boring little doors:
Materials: Hollow Core Door | Screen Molding | Wood glue | Wood Putty | Nail Gun | Paint
Step 1: Determine what your pattern will be for your hollow core doors. For these I chose simple horizontal stripes, but you can get fancy if you want, your old doors will thank you.
Step 2: Measure the width of the door and cut your molding down to size.
Step 3: Lay out the cut down pieces of molding on the door and make sure you have equal spacing before you attach them to the door… unless you’re going for an asymmetric look, that could be really cool too!
Step 4: Using some wood glue and a nail gun, attach the pieces of molding. Use some wood putty to fill in any nail holes before painting.
Step 5: Time to add some paint! For Kacie + Josh’s doors, we used HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Hammered Zinc. With this fresh coat of paint, everything looks cohesive and totally custom!
