I’ve worked in some pretty large spaces before, but this one was one of the most textbook open concept spaces I’ve transformed! It was big and completely undefined when I arrived.

Steph and Dan’s story is amazing… they actually lived in a trailer on their property for over a year while they were renovating their home, but once the demo and reno dust had settled, were stuck on the design for this massive living space. So… that’s where I came in!

Boho Farmhouse Makeover: Watch Below

There were tons of awesome products used in this makeover and I’ve pulled them together for ya in the slider below. Click for more info on any product.

This room has such great structure, it just needed a game plan, some paint, and a whole lotta love!

The homeowner’s one big request was a “cool leather couch” and I think we nailed it with this Modway Loft Sofa!

Steph and Dan wanted a classic farmhouse feel with a Bohemian twist… I called it Boho Farmhouse. I incorporated some of both style elements into this design, like with these DIY embroidery hoop pieces I put over their fireplace.

series5_after_blogsize-8

This is as easy as it looks– grab some large wooden embroidery hoops and wrap some yarn around them to create a webbing effect. We used a combo of circle and oval hoops to give some diversity to the wall. This was a quick, really inexpensive way to fill this large space. We also kept the mantle completely clear (which was hard for me), because the homeowner really wanted clean and simple!

Boho style has everything to do with texture, texture, texture! This wall hanging was a great piece to tie in the mantle decor, and these Brewster Vinyl cut-out stickers from Lowe’s we’re the perfect item to balance it out on the wall. This is a great way to add some visual interest to a space without changing anything major or repainting. Floral curtains, wall hanging, vinyl art… done and done.

This room has great light from the huge window that line the one side of the room, but that also meant it was basically impossible to find a curtain rod that long- about a million feet! Instead, we used galvanized pipe to make a custom, super long curtain rod, and with a few screws and some Bernard Floral Curtains, we were able to give Steph and Dan the option of curtains for that whole wall!

Ok, this might be my favorite project in the whole room- how cool is this reclaimed wood media unit?! You can get the full step-by-step tutorial HERE on Lowe’s website for this build. I’ve give you the 30 second version here.

We started with some large plywood pieces and built the frame and outside of the piece, then for the doors and drawers we used some kitchen flooring from someone that was gutting an old house in the area. Talk about upcycling!

Add some paint, hardware, and some Waddell Ash End Table legs, and you’ve got yourself a totally unique piece for any room in your home! This piece really brought together this section of the room, and how fun are these Modway Rocking Chairs?!

The next big project was Steph and Dan’s dining room table. They love to entertain and have family and friends over, so they definitely needed a space for this. And since we were at no shortage of space, of course we went with a giant boho farmhouse table! We helped define the dining space by adding this Kichler Industrial Tiered Chandelier which I was drawn to for it’s unique take on an Edison light. If you liked this light, but aren’t as farmhousey, (made that word up) you could use a different bulb type, like clear round bulbs, and it would look super modern.

series5_after_blogsize_vertical-13

By using the same type of galvanized pipe as we did for the curtain rod, for the table legs and base, we successfully combined industrial and farmhouse styles. Then, to bring in the boho vibe, we used the homeowner’s wooden chairs that she’d inherited from her grandparents and added a few Walker Edison Metal Cafe chairs at the head, as well as a unique Allen + Roth Belsburg Oriental rug. The combo of chairs, rug, and table just really works in my boho farmhouse world!

My favorite part about this table? The detailing, of course! By adding a simple stencil, you can add a totally custom touch to any piece of furniture with just a few brush strokes. To add this stencil, we first sanded and stained the table, using Minxwax Pre-Tinted gray stain, and allowed it to fully dry. Next, we used a geometric stencil (I picked it up at the craft store) and used light grey paint to dry brush stencil the ends and middle of the table. Once that was dry we sealed the entire table with a Minwax Semi-gloss poly. It was a simple finishing touch that totally nailed the boho farmhouse vibe I was going for!

With an open concept space like this, the key is to designate zones, so we created a dining area, a living and sitting area, and a kitchen area that all had their own functions, but worked seamlessly together!

series5_after_blogsize-12

Furniture arrangement is a simple way to create these ‘zones’ in your home, so don’t be afraid to move things around and try something new! In the living room area we tried some unique furniture placement… we used 2 Altra Metal Frame Coffee Tables and created an L shape with them. Underneath, we layered the St. Croix Matador Leather Woven rug and the Trans Ocean Sorrento Pinstripe rug, which did two things, 1- made the rugs appear much larger, and 2- upped the boho vibe. Remember texture, texture, texture.

We added 4 accent chairs in the living space – 2 Modway Rocking Chairs and 2 of these crazy comfy Modway Evade Lounge chairs. I love how the finished look is eclectic enough to be boho, but pulled together enough to fit the farmhouse bill.

Loving this space! It can be so hard to define one big room like you get with a lot of open concept homes. Love everything you did here!
