Hi Guys! Today I’m sharing some easy and affordable ways to Haunt your House on Live! with Kelly. We teamed up with Pinterest to try out some of the top trending Halloween projects that will hopefully inspire you to create your own version! You can tune in to watch the segment (9am EST), but if you missed it, don’t worry– I’ve got all the projects we did listed here for you!
All of these projects are super simple, so anyone can do them! Also, make sure you check out our Halloween Hacks Pinterest Board where we’ll be adding our inspiration from the whole week!
1. ‘Velcome’ Door Mat
You’ve all seen the standard, boring brown welcome mats, but why not take it up a notch? I’m going to show you how to turn this welcome mat into a ‘velcome’ mat!
Materials: Welcome Mat | Utility Knife | Acrylic Paint | Paint Brush
First, flip the mat over to the backside and draw in some lines to round out the bottom corners of the mat, so it’s a scallop shape. Then cut those off with your utility knife.
Next you’ll want to draw out a set of vampire teeth and the phrase “Velcome” underneath. A sharpie is a great way to sketch out onto the mat material, and don’t worry about the lines– you’ll paint right over them.
2. Ghost Face Frames
Materials: Foam Mannequin Head | Picture Frame | Spray Paint | Cheesecloth | Liquid Starch | Foam Core | X-acto Knife | Serrated Knife | Hot Glue Gun
This is a fun way to add some haunted elements to your home, and a great way to use up some spare picture frames you may have laying around. You can either use the styrofoam mannequin heads, or a simple Halloween mask, or a mix of both for varying looks. If you’re using the foam head, you’ll want to use your serrated knife to cut it in half, then using a hot glue gun, attach the head half to the foam core (cut that foam core to be the size of the frame first).
Once the head is dry, put on a layer of liquid cornstarch and start laying the cheesecloth on top of the head, draping lightly around the form. Keep layering the cheesecloth until the head is covered. Let that dry before you pop it into the frame. We sprayed our picture frames with an antique metallic spray paint, but you can use whatever color you want.
Having multiple shaped frames and faces add variety to your wall, so have fun with it!
3. Head in a Jar
Materials: Glass Jar with Lid | Photos of a Head | Clear Packing Tape | Food Coloring | Water
For the head, you’ll need a photo of the front of your face, and two profile shots with your ear. Take three photos of a face– front, and both sides, and cut them at the same spot. Tape them together on either side so you have a combined face that will wrap around your jar. You can also do this with a photo editing program and morph the three photos together (we used Photoshop, but there are lots of other free programs similar online). Print that photo out and make sure it will fit snugly inside your jar. You’ll want to cover that with packing tape so the water doesn’t ruin your printout, then stick the photo inside, wrapping around your jar, add some food coloring, and you’ll definitely creep out some guests!
4. Bleeding Candles
Materials: White & Red Candles | Red Crayons | Furniture Tacks | Plastic Spiders | Lighter
Whether you’re entertaining or prepping for your trick-or-treaters, these bleeding candles are a great way to add some creepy ambiance to your home.
For both the chunky candles and candlesticks, set them upright, and with a red tea light candle, use a lighter to melt the red wax onto the white candle. If you want a deeper red, you can use some red crayons to melt as well. Layering the red wax drip is also a great way to thicken the color and add more “blood” to your candles.
If you want to add a little something extra to your candles, add some furniture tacks or plastic spiders to your candles. There are some pretty funky Halloween candlesticks and candelabras out there that will compliment your new candles.
5. Spooky Floral Arrangement
A quick and easy way to add some Halloween spook to your home can be through floral arrangements. By simply adding a few googly eyes and a skeleton hand, take your centerpiece from a classic autumn look to a creeped-out Halloween focal point.
6. Lace Cornstarch Wallpaper
Materials: Lace Fabric | Liquid Cornstarch | Paint Roller
This is the best way to add some dramatic change to your home without any damage! We took a large piece of lace fabric and draped it on the wall. Then we took some liquid cornstarch and “painted” over the whole piece of fabric. Two coats of the cornstarch will allow for a secure adhesion to the wall, but the best part about this hack is that there’s no damage to your wall! When the cornstarch dries and you’re ready to take down your fabric, simple wash off the cornstarch residue with some soap and water, and you’re wall is back to normal!
7. Outdoor Creeptastic Decor
Don’t stop at just haunting the inside of your house, work your way to the exterior with a few simple decorating hacks. Opt with some autumn-inspired plants and flowers like fall cabbage or dark colored flowers. This is also a great time of year to leave some dead plants and sticks around the yard– it’s Halloween and that’s perfect!
Floral wire is a great way to hang things on your house, like skeletons or other decorative items, and it’s virtually invisible!

I really liked the photo jar on Thursdays show! What was added to make it smoke? Would appreciate a reply. Thank you.
The smoke was from some dry ice we put in the jar– not too easy to come by but it makes for a great, spooky effect!
