Last month, I was given a once in a lifetime opportunity. A room came along that is the stuff that designer’s dreams are made of. I told you a bit about Courtney + John’s amazing space in my announcement post but you guys, it was SO much more than I could have imagined. It was two days of decorating with my best friend Jess, insane amounts of IG photo opps, vintage thrifting goodness, making fun new friends, and having an all around fabulous time in one of the coolest houses I’ve ever been in.
Before I get into the nuts and bolts of the makeover, I’ve got to show you more of this amazing house and tell you it’s story…
Courtney and John moved into their circa 1890s home, which they call “Content” about a year ago. They had driven past the house so many times and had no idea that it was a hidden gem! Content has so many cool stories in it’s history, but just to name a few… the entire house was moved from across the street to it’s current location, it was once a brothel, it was condemned when they originally bought it. Content has 10 fireplaces, a center courtyard, and 50 + windows.
John and Courtney knew that this home would become their life and could be transformed into something amazing. They’re working room by room slowly renovating and bringing their house to life… the problem with renovating such a HUGE project is that it takes a ton of time, money, and effort- they’ve done an amazing job on their kitchen, master bedroom and bath. I actually would like to move into that bathroom
One massive space that had been neglected thus far in the renovations was the family room. It didn’t need major changes- the bones were amazing- but, with it being such a large space it seemed a bit overwhelming knowing where to begin decor-wise. I’m so glad Courtney and John asked for my help!
This is where the family room started…
And how it looks now…
I couldn’t love this space any more than I do. I my goal for the space was to create a Christmas wonderland that respected the amazing character of the home and to try to seamlessly combine tons of brand new items from Lowe’s Holiday collection with the Courtney & John’s collection of thrifted and picked goods. They both love going to flea markets and we actually took a break in the middle of our makeover to run to a big outdoor flea market with them on Sunday morning- Jess and I both scored vintage sleds and a few other fun items I’ll be up cycling sometime soon! Courtney & John had rooms piled with all of amazing vintage finds and it was am amazing honor and responsibility to try and bring those pieces to life and make them work cohesively in this makeover.
I’m going to share a ton of pictures of this makeover, but you can use the slider below to find out exactly what products we used from Lowe’s!

The plaid and fur stockings were perfect for this mantel and since this was a vintage remix the Lowe’s nutcrackers seemed like the perfect touch!
Lowe’s had faux lanterns that looked completely authentic, but were battery operated!
I used a vintage mirror and a pre-lit garland from Lowe’s that I added some extra Christmas balls to.
This side of the room was the more formal, classic style.
See the gold art on the walls…Would you believe me if I told you I spray painted some rubber floor mats gold and hung them on the wall?!? Believe it!
At under $7.00 each, they were a great solution to a large wall space that needed decor! I love when a simple DIY project can look high end and look amazing next to legit vintage items.
The tree was overall had a formal style, but with lots of personality and some DIY ornaments.
These ornaments are actually BATHROOM TILE! Sorry for the type shouting, but they’re my new favorite thing!
A sheet of this tile costs $6.98 and I was able to make a bunch of ornaments and some gift tags with it!
I put a dab of hot glue and a hook onto the back
and instantly had a super cute ornament. I actually made a ton for my own home and used paint pens to decorate them.
I also used some as cute gift tags…
I also made the little gold ring tassels and they’re made from
another mind blowing material… Hello $5 MOP!
I was walking through Lowe’s and realized how much cotton is on a mop- TONS and knew I could make something out of it! Tree tassels and a string light garland were the result!
To make the tassel ornaments I used a brass ring that they just started carrying at my local Lowe’s (sorry, but I bought all of them- I’m sure they’ll restock soon! ha!) and about 12 inches of mop. I looped it through the ring and had myself a tassel.
For the string light, one of the awesome Lowe’s volunteers cut the strings from the mop and I had her create tassels in between the edison style bulbs.
I also used a few tassels on presents… yeah- I love them.
It just might be one of my best hacks of all time! Holiday Mop Hack for the win!
Before we head to the other side of the room, this is one of my favorite shots of the whole makeover… peeking through the door. It’s so welcoming!
Now let me show you the other side of the room… it’s basically a full second room to design and I went with a style that totally works with the first, but is a little more casual. Here’s where we started…
And where we ended up…
This is fireplace #2 and we went with some causal flea market finds.
Courtney and John had so many cool lanterns out in their garage area.
I used more casual stockings from Lowe’s on this fireplace and I had a minor designer/blogger fail… I forgot to fill the stocking, so they’re kind of hanging wonky, but I’m sure on Christmas morning they’ll be filled and amazing!
This tree was more colorful and playful- I love doing vertical ribbons and garlands. If you haven’t tried that before, give it a whirl!
Let’s talk about presents for a second… I think it’s a crying shame to only have a tree surrounded by presents for a few hours on Christmas morning, so I wrap tons of empty boxes (I do this at home too) so my trees look adorable the entire month leading up to Christmas!
Mix and match some baskets, containers, and accessories and you’ve got one fabulous tree!
I got all my wrapping supplies at Lowe’s- I also love that they have HUGE rolls of craft paper super inexpensively.
To help make the room division feel natural, I added a thrifted bench with presents and then these stacked trunks that I ordered from Lowe’s online! You’d never even guess that they were brand spankin’ new!
Looking from one side over to the other
And last but not least… the 3rd area- a little nook that I turned into a wrapping station
Before
And after…
It’s crazy how well the modern table works with all the rustic, vintage, and classic pieces. I love a good mash up of styles!
The mop garland looked super cute in this section of the room!
The doors were gorgeous
And Courtney has a place to wrap all her gifts throughout the season!
If you’re curious about that pretty white present, let me just tell you that it’s my most favorite present in the history of ever! It’s not wrapping paper… it’s… wait for it… WALLPAPER!
I love wrapping gifts with unique paper ideas, and this one is no exception.. in fact it might be the new example!
The texture of the wallpaper makes your gifts look so luxurious.
I hope all the presents we left for Courtney and John will inspire them as they wrap real gifts- ha!
I loved every single second of this makeover… The homeowners were awesome and I had so much fun with my BFF Jess there helping me with the whole thing.
A huge thank you to Lowe’s for allowing me to do this makeover and to Courtney and John for entrusting their beautiful home into my hands! And this makeover reveal wouldn’t be what it is without the photography skills of Laura Olivia Photography To follow along on the rest of Content’s renovation, check out Courtney’s IG feed HERE
So… What’d you think of my Lowe’s Holiday Makeover? I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

Awesome makeover! I love everything! And now plan on doing a stair tread project for my daughter’s apartment! By the way, the picture of the nook had me checking and rechecking, and checking again, all pictures,to compare walls, windows, doors, floors, ceilings…I was SURE you had inserted a picture from another room in the house…. until I finally figured out…the picture was upside down!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
I love what you have done with the space. The tile ornaments…… genius!!!!
Yeah, that place is amazing. I’m not an IG girl, so I wish they had a blog!
