Fall Decorating Ideas 2014

Today is the first day that it officially feels like fall here on the East Coast (well at least in PA)- I’m rocking a warm cardigan and everything…so, I wanted to share some unique fall decorating ideas for 2014.  Some are older ideas, some are new, but I feel like they all work for 2014 and aren’t exactly what you’ll find in every house on the block.   I’m still debating if I’m going to decorate or not (finishing the EC2 Apartment has been taking up my time and my creative juices), but for now, these projects left me feeling really inspired!  Enjoy!

Faux Feather Painted Leaves

I love how simple this is, but how unique it looks!  It’s definitely a “why didn’t I think of that” kind of project.  You could accent a tablescape or make a garland as they did here.

I’m Dreaming of a White… Christmas Autumn

So this isn’t unique to 2014, but going white during the fall in the midst of all the deep, saturated colors is always out of the norm.  What I really like here is mixing white/grey tones.  I’m not usually a fan of cream or ivory, but I think decor done in all these tones could be really pretty and could go vintage, country, and even modern!

Book Page Watercolor Leaves

Again, such a simple idea to DIY, from artist and creative genius Alisa Burke, but it’s so perfect too!  She created a wreath from her cut out leaves, but you could just frame a page, create a table runner, etc… I also love that my kids could get in on this with me.  Tracing leaves and imperfect painting is right up their alley!

He’s Got 1/2 the World in His Hands…

Putting fall-ish stuff in containers isn’t a new concept, but thinking outside the box- or out of this world- in this case (insert eye roll here) is what I love about this project.  Globes are a dime a dozen at thrift stores (a few of my favorite local shops are Liberty Thrift, Good Stuff, and Trolly House Emporium) and it would be even cooler to mark off all the places you’ve visited or places you and your fam dream of going to one day.  So many everyday items can become containers- remember my paint-dipped paint can planters?

Fancy Free-Hand Lace Pumpkins

I’ll do a full post dedicated to pumpkin decorating, (you can check out our past year pumpkin ideas here and here), but these pumpkins don’t scream Halloween- they scream “Somebody with mad free-hand skills made me!”  So true right?!? Honestly though, these could act as beautiful fall decor and if the black is too Oct. 31st for you, you could use another color.  I’m also loving how chalk paint works and looks on pumpkins.  It’s matte perfection!

Metallic Leaf Garland

Sometimes I think I’m over chalkboards and then I see a project staged like this and I’m reminded just how timeless it is.  This is technically a Thanksgiving project, but I think it’s really perfect for fall and rather than writing what you’re thankful for, you could use it as an Autumn Bucket List.  Check out the link for the details on how to make this metallic leaf garland.

Inexpensive Printable Artwork

When I say inexpensive, I’m talking under 4 bucks for each of these prints from my favorite printable art source Disposable Art Shop.   They have a HUGE selection of art that would work well for fall, but since the world’s love affair with antlers is far from over, I picked out these 3 antler prints.  The red, geometric one is part of a series that I’m majorly crushing on right now!

Office Supply Whimsy

Fall decor doesn’t have to be so serious- I love the causal, whimsical feel of this pumpkin.  Office supply stores can be an awesome source for DIY supplies.  These fasteners are really inexpensive.  Our design idol Nate has awesome office supplies at Target that would make any pumpkin epic!

Sweater Wrapped Vase

Let’s be honest… this project is soooo 2012 (Ha!) but I think it would totally work with all the copper and rose gold metallics that are a 2014 trend!

Treat Sack Tree

Why is it that anything in miniature form is automatically 100 times cuter?  My kids are slightly obsessed with Halloween, so this would be great as a countdown.

Feather and Herb Place Setting

I’d probably suggest NOT using feathers that you find out in nature, but there are so many neat feather options at craft stores these days. Combined with a sprig of herbs and some butcher style washi this setting is perfection!

Gourd Bowling

So, I’ll admit, I have no idea how well this would actually work out, but can we all agree it’s adorable?  If you have a large dining room table like our Ikea Hack Farmhouse Table, you could create this as a centerpiece.  I’m keeping that in mind for Thanksgiving (we’re hosting again this year! Yay!)

Engineer Print Mantle Artwork

We love us some engineer prints and taking a stock image or an actual picture you’ve taken and turning it into a black and white engineer print is a great way to make a BIG statement at a tiny cost.  Here are some other ways we’ve used engineer prints if you want some other ideas:

Monster Entryways

As our final tid-bit of inspiration, we’re throwing it back to my front door the last 2 years.  I earned cool-points with my kids and just about every kid that visited our home during the fall.
