My design philosophy is rooted in authenticity + attainability - If I can do it, you can too! My work has been featured in countless publications, but I take the most pride in homeowners that have been personally inspired by my DIY ideas and have tried something in their own homes!

I’ve seen a lot of cool accent walls, but this modern faux stone accent wall rocked my socks!  We wanted to create something that was totally bold and graphic and super unique for this modern dining room makeover on “Knock It Off!” and I think we succeeded!  I’m going to give you all the details and full tutorial here, but if you haven’t seen this episode, you can watch it online here.

Now, I know this accent wall is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was perfect for this room and using sharpie paint pens instead of buying expensive wallpaper saved us a ton of money and also allowed us to customize it exactly how we wanted it!    Okay- here’s how we did it.

Materials:

Pencil

Sharpie Paint Pen Wide Tip (NOT a regular Sharpie)

That’s all… yeah, so I really didn’t need a materials list did I? Oh well!

Step 1:

Use a pencil to roughly sketch out the shape of your stones.  I found it was easiest to just go for it- not overthink it at all.  That helped all the shapes remain imperfect and organic.  Now, you don’t have to do a faux stone pattern (even though we think it’s epic), you can do anything! Tribal patterns, hexagons, stripes, etc…

Step 2:

Once we had the shapes sketched out we began tracing over the pencil lines with our Sharpie Paint Pens.  Now, let’s chat about Sharpies and walls shall we?  If you write on your walls with a regular Sharpie, you will be cursing like a sailor- even if you’re not known to curse, the words will just fly out!  A regular sharpie is oil-based so even if you’d paint over it, it will bleed through pretty much for all eternity. You’ve been warned!  The paint pens come in a water-based formula, so you’ll be able to paint over it no problemo!

We wanted our faux stone to look like some super fancy fine artist had painted it, so we were not perfect with our lines.  At first it was hard not to get all OCD, but once we stepped back, we loved the brush stroke look it created.  We might have called ourselves Picaso a few times.

We painted the other 3 walls in the room a bright citron color and I just love the intense contrast between it and the black and white.

Now, check this out- we could have paid $149/roll for this modern wallpaper, but instead created our own modern accent wall for only the cost of white paint and some Sharpies! To get a look exactly like this wallpaper, you’d just need to tweak your shape and color them in- so awesome!

So what do you think of this modern, bold accent wall? If you’re not quite the bold, quirky type, what style would you try on your Sharpie Accent Wall?
